CPES-VT welcomes 14 new students and 2 new visiting scholars in Fall 2007

With the significant addition of new talents, CPES is expecting steady growth, even as it prepares to graduate from the NSF ERC program in 2008.

Since the Center's establishment as a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (NSF ERC) in 1998, CPES has received over $30 million in ERC funding and has averaged over $7 million in research funding per year. In preparation for graduation from the NSF program next year, the Center is not entering a downsizing phase; rather, it is expanding its graduate enrollment. For the current year, 14 new students have been hired, among which 9 are in the Ph.D. program and 5 are enrolled as M.S. students. For the current year alone, CPES-VT has been awarded over $2 million in funding from industry- and government-sponsored research, with another $1.3 million in anticipated sponsored research funding.

As the Center advances towards the post-NSF era, its research program is expanding to address both the national and global needs of emerging applications such as alternative energy, more energy efficient and cleaner transportation (including automobiles, trains, airplanes, and ships), and energy efficient lighting and appliances.
