December 2004:
NSF approves $12.5 million funding renewal for Virginia Tech-based Center for Power Electronics Systems.
On December 1-3, Dr. Fred C. Lee gave a keynote presentation entitled "An Integrated Power Electronics Modular Approach: Concept and Implementation" at the Taipei Power Forum and Exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan. Dr. Lee also delivered an invited presentation titled "Powering the Next Generation of Microprocessors."
November 2004:
On November 11, 2004, Dr. Fred C. Lee was presented with and outstanding Alumnus Achievement Award by National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan.
Dr. J. Daan van Wyk was appointed as a member of the 2005 IEEE Fellow Committee.
September 2004:
On September 27, 28, and 29, Dr. Fred C. Lee taught a three-day short course entitled "Modeling and Control Design of DC/DC Converters" at Texas Instruments, Dallas, Texas.
During Summer 2004, Dr. Daan van Wyk was International Conference Chair of the 3rd VDE/IEEE International Conference on Integrated Power Electronics Systems, Aaachen, Germany (Held in conjunction with the IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference. Dr. van Wyk also addressed the 8th IEEE International Conference on Solid Dielectrics in Toulouse, France on: "The future of dielectric materials in electronic power processing"
During Summer 2004, Dr. Dushan Boroyevich was Visiting Professor at the University ROMA TRE - Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering - from May 25th to June 19th . He presented 2 seminars entitled, "Overview of Research at Center for Power Electronics Systems" and "Power Electronics Education at Virginia Tech." Dr. Boroyevich also received the EPE-PEMC Council Award for his outstanding achievements and service in the profession. His citation stated in part "For the development of geometric approach to modelling and control of multi-phase, multi-level, high-frequency switching power converters and for leading the research towards increased levels of integration and development of standard-cell open-architecture electronic power processing."
Elizabeth Tranter (VT), Dr. Bevlee Watford (VT) and Dr. Fred C. Lee (VT) were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to establish a summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) for Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation scholars. This program will be held during the summer in 2005-2007.
Elizabeth Tranter (VT), Dr. Leslie Pendleton (VT), and Dr. Kathleen Meehan (VT) along with VT graduate and undergraduate students Terri Varnado, James Gaeddert, Clint Perdue, Adam Kemp, and Craig Lewis conducted a workshop for precollege robotics coaches and children on September 11, 2004 at Christiansburg Middle School. August 2004:
Dr. Dushan Boroyevich (VT) received the Dean's award for Research Excellence from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering. Dr. Boroyevich serves as CPES Deputy Director and as the Integrated Power Electronics Module (IPEM)-Based Power Conversion Systems research team leader.
Dr. Thomas A. Lipo (UW) is the author of a new book titled "Introduction to AC Machine Design. (ISBN 0-9745470-1-8) For more information about this book please contact Bonnie Johnson at bjohnson@engr.wisc.edu. Dr. Lipo serves as Integrated Modular Motor Drives research team leader at CPES.
Dr. Fred C. Lee (VT), CPES Director, has been named an honorary Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, as Honorary Sun Yuen Chuan Professor at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, and as academic advisor for the Engineering Department at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Lee also serves as Integrated Power Supply research team leader for CPES.
Dr. Robert D. Lorenz (UW) served as Chair of the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Periodicals Review Committee and Vice-Chair of the IEEE Publications Services and Products Board Operating Committee. He also received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the IEEE Industry Applications Society in 2003. Dr. Lorenz serves as Control and Sensor Integration team leader at CPES.
Dr. G.-Q. Lu (VT) is Associate Editor of the Journal of Electronic Packaging (ASME). Dr. Lu also serves as Integrated Materials research team leader for CPES.
Dr. Efraín O Neill (UPRM) has been selected distinguished Electrical Engineer by the Puerto Rico Institute of Electrical Engineers. Dr. O Neill is a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and serves as a member of the CPES Education Committee and Director of the CPES-UPRM Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.
Dr. J. Daan van Wyk (VT) is Chair for the Editorial Board of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. In May 2004, Dr. van Wyk also served as Chair of the Future Energy and Power Processing Conference (FEPPCON V) in Catania, Italy. Dr. van Wyk is the research team leader for High-Density Integration at CPES.
