Duke Energy Day
|
Because of North Carolina A&T State University's (NCA&T) involvement with CPES, Duke Energy now supports its outreach efforts by sponsoring "Duke Energy Day" on the campus of NCA&T. Duke Energy Day is designed to expose K-12 and college students to the areas of energy and power electronics. This event involves a series of lectures on energy and power electronics, various presentations, a tour of the NCA&T CPES and circuits labs, and introductions to both Duke Energy Company and CPES. The first Duke Energy Day was hosted on campus on July 22, 2005. Duke Energy became involved after witnessing the transformation of area high school students in the CPES summer camp. Impressed with the presentations by the CPES high-school students, NCA&T students, and NCA&T faculty, Duke Energy decided to become involved. Each year, Prof. Abdollah Homaifar, along with other NCA&T students and faculty, visits area high schools to increase awareness and interest in energy and power electronics. As a result of these visits, NCA&T receives dozens of applications each year to the two-week CPES Summer Camp. Twelve new students are selected from these applicants and two students from the previous year are invited to serve as mentors. During the camp, the high school students are given a crash-course in energy and power electronics by both CPES graduates and undergraduates under the guidance of CPES faculty. The program has improved each year, and the high-school presentations have become noticeably professional. |
