Power Electronics Research Experience for Undergraduates
A variety of power electronics research opportunities will be given to Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) students. REU students will be paired with graduate students to perform power electronics design, fabrication, and testing. REU students are encouraged to participate the existing projects such as: distributed power systems, integrated packaging, advanced power semiconductor devices, and integrated power electronics module synthesis. The REU students will have an opportunity at the beginning of the program to choose the project in which they would like to participate. Students also experience an industry-like training process that develops teamwork, record keeping, communication and presentation skills that gives the student a framework under which to organize their new research skills.
Students Participating In This Program May:
- Work with Electrical, Mechanical, and other Engineering faculty.
- Perform device characterization, circuit modeling and simulation.
- Design, fabricate, and test power supplies.
- Apply power electronics circuits to different energy sources such as fuel cell and photovoltaics.
Seminars
In addition to their research, a wide range of theory will be presented in a classroom environment supporting the program's experimental studies. The undergraduate participants will be given weekly classes in basic power electronics, ethics in engineering, safety, and instrumentation usages. The REU students will have an opportunity to present their work in the end of the program.
