The new project, "Integration of Advanced Power Electronics through the Packaging of High-Temperature Silicon Carbide (SiC) Devices in Multichip Power Modules," is a joint initiative between CPES-Virginia Tech and Arkansas Power Electronics International, Inc. (APEI, Inc.), funded under NSF-ERC and SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) programs.
Over the past several years, CPES and APEI, Inc. have independently conducted complementary research on high-temperature power electronics and related packaging and system technologies for various applications where high power density and/or operation in high-temperature environment are of critical importance, such as in automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, and military applications.
In the new one-year project, the CPES-APEI team will build upon the previous successes and improve the SiC modules by increasing power capability and redesigning the control stage packaging. The synergy generated from this collaboration will strengthen the research capacity at both CPES and APEI, and will speed the transition of the research and technology advances to the market place.
