CPES proudly congratulates Prof. Dushan Boroyevich, recipient of the 2007 William E. Newell Power Electronics Award

Congratulations to Dr. Dushan Boroyevich, recipient of the 2007 William E. Newell Power Electronics Award presented at PESC on June 21, 2007!

Hiro Akagi, representative of the IEEE Board of Directors and PELS President, presents award to Dushan Boroyevich at PESC 2007

Dr. Boroyevich is the 5th CPES professor to receive this highly prestigious award! Previous CPES faculty recipients include Profs. Fred Lee (1989), Tom Lipo (1990), Daan van Wyk (1995) and Tom Jahns (1999).

The Williams E. Newell Power Electronics Award has been presented annually since 1977 to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the advancement of power electronics. Beginning in 2005, the Award was elevated to an IEEE Technical Field Award, sponsored by the Power Electronics Society.

Since 1998, Dushan Boroyevich has, together with CPES Director Fred Lee, worked in partnership with more than 80 member companies and led CPES to become the most renowned power electronics research and education center in the world. In addition to its alumni, the most enduring legacy of CPES is the paradigm shift in power electronics research towards higher levels of integration and modularization. Dr. Boroyevich also developed a comprehensive geometric approach to modeling and control of high-frequency switching power converters, which has become a major tool in the analysis, design, and control of emerging power-electronics-based electrical distribution systems in cars, ships, aircrafts, and data communication centers.

Dr. Boroyevich is being recognized "for advancement of control, modeling, and design of switching power converters." Regarding his impact on the success of his graduate students, an endorser for the award writes, "Professor Boroyevich has instilled in them not only the technical competence, but also the passion for and the love of power electronics, which carries them to their own accomplishments."

An IEEE Fellow, Dr. Boroyevich is the co-director of CPES and the American Electric Power Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
