Willem Gerhardus Odendaal received his bachelors, masters and doctorate in electrical and electronics engineering from Rand Afrikaans University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1992, 1995 and 1997, respectively. He then filled an invited postdoctoral position at Virginia Tech for one year before joining Philips Research North America in Briarcliff Manor, New York as Senior Member of Research Staff. As of August 2001 he has been a tenure-track faculty member of the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and a core faculty member of CPES. He has taught 11 sections of 2000 and 3000 level courses, and teaches a graduate course on EMI and filter design.

He is co-author of over 100 articles, including 22 IEEE journal articles and 48 peer-reviewed IEEE conference articles. Three of his publications have received IEEE best paper awards. He is co-inventor of 7 US and international patents. His personal share of funding over the past 5 years exceeds one million dollars. His research interests include electromagnetic and thermodynamic energy processing and packaging of power electronic circuits, integrated EMI filters, RF power, sensing technologies, gravitomagnetism and electromechanical energy conversion, among others.

Dr. Odendaal is past chairman of the Power Electronics Devices and Components Committee of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, has served for 3 years as Member-at-Large of the Administrative Committee (ADCOM) of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, and as officer of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, in which he also serves as an associate editor. At the university he currently serves, among others, on University Council and on the University Advisory Council on Strategic Budgeting and Planning. He chairs the Commission on Faculty Affairs and he is the Vice President of the Faculty Senate.
