Rolando Burgos graduated with honors from the University of Concepción, Concepción, Chile, where he obtained the B.S., Electronics Engineering (M.S. equivalent), M.S. in Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering degrees in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2002 respectively. Since September 2002 he has been at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University working at the NSF Engineering Research Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES); as a Visiting Scholar (Sep.'02-June'03), Research Scientist (July'03-Aug.'05), and since August 2005 as a Research Assistant Professor.
Dr. Burgos' research experience encompasses the development of advanced hybrid ac-dc variable-frequency marine and aircraft power electronics conversion systems, featuring work on: multivariable control theory for the development of stability criteria for ac, ac/dc, and dc power electronics distribution systems, development of sensorless control schemes for permanent magnet electrical machines, module-based PEBB power converters, distributed digital control architectures, hierarchical electromagnetic modeling, as well as the development of advanced nonlinear controls and novel power conversion structures for three-phase power converters for high reliability, high power density applications, high-current rectifiers, and medium voltage current-source drives.
Dr. Burgos has co-advised and worked in close collaboration with graduate students for the past five years. He is coauthor of more than 85 peer reviewed publications, including one chapter in the book, "Fusion of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Sets, and Genetic Algorithms," and nine IEEE Transactions papers. Dr. Burgos has been recipient of several academic excellence awards, including an IEEE-Industrial Electronics Society Student Award in 2000 and 2001, and has recently been elected Secretary of the IEEE Power Electronics Society Committee on Modeling, Control and Simulation. Dr. Burgos serves as an active reviewer for several IEEE Journals and Conferences, and also for the National Council on Science and Technology of the Chilean Government. Dr. Burgos has been an IEEE Member since 1996 (S '96, M '03).
